History

In 1954 Lee originated as an elementary school.[1] The school was named in honor of Harriet S. Lee who taught in Woodland schools around the turn of the century. She was the first woman appointed to the Yolo County Board of Education in 1892. In 1968, 17 years after her death, Miss Lee was recognized by a California legislative proclamation acknowledging her as the founder of Mother's Day in California. In 1966 the elementary school was expanded to form Lee Junior High school.[1] At this point the school carried 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. In 2003, the name changed again to reflect the move of the 9th grade class to the high schools in town.

Village System

Lee Middle School has a village system with two villages per grade level. Students stay with the same villages for two years. This system allows students and teachers to develop close relationships and provides continuity in the student' education while at Lee Middle School. Village teachers have a common planning period to provide time for collaboration, student case management, and parent meetings.

Now, 2010 rarely are the village systems used. Mostly they are used as a way to separate different students into counseling "groups".

Today

Lee Middle School today has many students and offers a selection of jobs. They offer a Leadership class and a wide variety of "Expos". Due to the recent budget cuts however, many teachers face the fears of being laid of for next year, along with popular expos and programs such as, Yearbook, art, leadership and much more... are in danger of being "canceled" due to the increasingly budget cuts for the WJUSD school district.
